As a father, everything that my children are exposed to fascinates me. Whether its the music they’re listening too, the toys they play with, the television they watch (Diego and The Backyardigans are the current favorites) or the books that they read.

Anyways – I can’t remember how it came up, but Michael was telling me about a classic German kids book ‘Vom kleinen Maulwurf, der wissen wollte, wer ihm auf den Kopf gemacht hat.’

Or, loosely: ‘The little mole would like to know who pooped on his head’.

Translating the Wikipedia page basically gives the plot description (slighted edited by me): ‘The mole finds a Haeufchen on his head. In order to find out from whom it comes, he asks a pigeon, a horse, a rabbit, a goat, a cow and a pig. From the flies (who are specialists), the mole finds out that it was Hans Heinrich, the dog of the butcher’.

Wow.

However, it’s interesting to note that cultures aren’t too different – in the US, there’s the New York Times bestseller Walter the Farting Dog series (or the Latin version – ‘Canis Inflatus‘).

You missed the part about how each animal says “I, no, how so? I do it like this” and shows the little mole what its poop looks like. Also, Häufchen = “pile”. A pile fell on the the mole’s head.

But otherwise yeah, that’s basically the story.

I think this could explain some aspects of German humor, such as Doris Dörrie. I’ll never forget watching “Keiner liebt mich” with Yvonne in a theater in Marburg, Germany and thinking “W. T. F?!?” while the audience laughed uproariously at all the wrong parts (which was pretty much the entire movie, actually). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DByLW0zPlp0
