Last week I talked about “Trimming the Online Fat“, but I forgot to mention another source of information overload in my life: The number of feeds that I subscribe to and attempted to read routinely was up to 248.

Yes, 248.

I know there are folks out there that love the fact that they subscribe to 1000’s of blogs or want to be bombarded in email every time a new post occurs, but there’s simply a point where usefulness crosses the line and becomes noise.

Purge! I simplified my blogroll and deleted 149 from the list.

Now that I’m under 100, not only does refreshing my feeds take half the time, I can breeze through the new items and pay more attention to the items that matter, rather than just trying to climb out of the landslide of posts.

Finally, I thought I’d pass along one of the newer blogs that I have been reading while working on my ‘zen of simplicity‘ is Zen Habits. They recently had some great tips on slowing down.

Congratulations on taking control of your time! It is so easy to get into the habit of “I should read that” and never deciding what benefit those things have on your life. Accumulating is far easier for most than simplifying. We hold on to the “would’a, could’a, should’a” thoughts and get caught up. We forget why we wanted to read that feed in the first place. For your readers that may have a hard time slimming down, I write quite a bit on decluttering you life to make room for what is really important. Here is my #1 favorite decluttering question: “What is the worst possible thing that will happen if I don’t have X?” If you can live with the answer, then maybe it is time to get rid of X. To your success!

With all of this new found free time in the form of less to read and manage, less to print, less to wash, less to watch — maybe you can actually find time to work? Maybe? Please?

Hey good for you! Now only if you can tell me of a good news reader because I hate NetNewsWire.
