Magnificent Desolation

A while back, I commented on what I thought was the ‘best home page’ and quickly came to the conclusion that about:blank was it. The same thing goes for my desktop:

It’s amazing to me how many times I go to a machine (whether Mac or PC) and there’s 30,000 random turds littering the screen. Makes me insane – I have no idea how people can work like that. I’ve taken the stern approach that my desktop is not a dumping ground for link shortcuts, documents, etc and have become a firm believer in the desolate desktop. As Jeff puts it: “Your Desktop is Not a Destination“.
And, for those curious to see what’s going on my dock these days:

Yeah, but how much stuff is in your Downloads folder?
Pretty background image – where from?
Now you just need to hide the dock (System Prefs->Dock->Auto hide), hard drive icon (Finder->Preferences->General->Show these items on the Desktop uncheck them all), and menu bar (glaringly missing, but search the web for ways to do it including MenuShade, menufela, LSUIPresentationMode, and Apple’s own TN2062).
I think I can identify all but two of your Dock apps:
Finder
?
Webkit daily
NetNewsWire
?
XCode
Coda
TextMate
VoodooPad
OmniGraffle Pro 4
iTunes
Aperture
Photoshop
Final Cut
iMovie ‘08
Mail
Entourage
Photo Booth
Quicken
VMWare Fusion
Terminal
Cisco VPN Client
Cyberduck
Where’s Keychain?

As a complete Mac noob, what kind of system would you recommend for Video editing etc? Also, were I to take the Mac plunge, could I use my 22″ Widescreen monitor, or would I need a new one? (i.e. do the use proprietary video connectors?)

To be honest, iMovie 08 can handle most of my basic needs. Final Cut Express 4.0 is great if you want to go up to the next level beyond that.
The Mac has a DVI out, so your monitor is probably fine.
