Instead of hooking up external drives to each of the machines in the house to use Time Machine, I’d rather have each machine just use Infrant ReadyNAS in the closet. In order to set it up, I had to follow these instructions (per the Infrant forums):

  • Install the latest Radiator beta and verify that you can view the shares under Finder.
  • Make sure Bonjour and AFP is turned on.
  • Create a new share on the NAS called “TimeMachine”. (Note: I ended up doing a different share for each machine I was going to sync with).
  • Change the system preference to allow you to view external drives:

defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

  • Go into finder and mount the TimeMachine share by browsing to the “AFP on …” link, and open the TimeMachine share. This will allow it to be selected in the Time Machine preference pane.

Thats it.. Networked Time Machine.

Hmmm, does it actually work, or just look like it works? (I’ve seen configs where the backups appear to run, but TM UI doesn’t show any backups)

Oh it works. We fortuitously installed Leopard a week before losing some important files. Time Machine worked like a charm to get everything back.

Do you need to be using an HFS+ filesystem on the server?
