I Missed My Flight Today

Today was going to be one of those shotgun business trips - leave Seattle @ 6am for Los Angeles, have a day of meetings, and shoot back on the 7pm flight.
Normally this wouldn’t be too big of a deal, but for some reason, this week has been especially trying and I can tell that I’ve been run down way more than usual. I’ve been averaging around 3 or 4 hours of sleep a night, with the kids getting up at all sorts of crazy times all of a sudden (1am on Monday, 3am on Tuesday, etc). One of the biggest problems is that I usually can’t fall back asleep - if I wake up, my mind starts to race and I end up getting up and just heading into work.
Add in the manic pace I’ve been on lately and blowing out my knee last night (I slipped on the hard wood running in circles with my son) - the writing was on the wall for me today.
I stumbled out of bed at 4am, showered, got dressed and headed over to SeaTac, getting there around 5. As usual, I glanced up on the board, saw that “Alaska” and “Los Angeles” was at gate D1. After getting through security, I got a coffee and a bagel, headed to the gate, sat down at started to read email, news, etc.
But when 5:50 rolled around and we hadn’t begun boarding, I decided to check the flight status (on a really cool iPhone app I’m writing, I might add), and noticed it said my flight was at D7. Ahhhhhh!
After bolting through the airport, I arrived at the gate with the plane 3ft from the gantry.
Yes, I missed my flight. The worst part was that I was at the airport eating a bagel, goofing around with the iPhone camera, and reading email. I suck.

I feel for ya, I did something similar in Atlanta (30+ gates per concourse). After checking the gate I was very comfy after eating with my whole family. Then we went to the gate. They changed the gate and concourse. We had 10 min to go from then of one concourse to the end of another, with a nine and four year old!!!!! We made it somehow….but I will never live that bonehead move down.
So feel for ya!

Life is short. The most important question is, did you enjoy the bagel?
