It’s the call from your spouse that every geek fears: “Something smells like it’s burning from the closet with all your computer stuff“.

And to make it worse, not only was I 800 miles away on business, but just a few minutes before giving a presentation. In a frantic move (and frankly I had no other idea on what to do), I had her pull the plug on the server, the NAS and anything else I could think of in the closet so I could figure out what was going on. The only thing that kept going through my head is that I was in store for another catastrophic data loss.

The good news was that this time I was prepared - the most crucial data on the NAS was being backed up to an external USB drive as well as the cloud. I figured the worst case would just cost some time and money - but the data was safe.

A few days later and back home, I finally was able to check things out. Apparently, the power supply in the Infrant decided to melt itself, but the drives were safe. Now I just need to deal with support and get a new PSU into the unit…
