Warning, spoilers ahead…..

Just finished watching the season finale of Heroes and while I still maintain that this is one of the best new shows this season, there’s some nagging questions. So, the most obvious is: why didn’t Peter just fly away? Why did it take Nathan to whisk him into space, killing (presumedly) both of them? Who knows, perhaps season two will start out with an exploding Phantom Zone next season….

And yes, by the blood stain leading towards the sewer, it looks like Sylar survives (cool). And even more intriguing, there sounds like there’s a really bad guy on the horizon (based on what Molly said).

Anyways, as far as season finale’s go, it was okay. In some ways I was expecting more, but all in all, it was a pretty satisfying ending to Chapter One. Now, on to Chapter Two…

I was actually a little disappointed. It sort of felt a bit hollow. They all got together and … nothing really happened. Strange that the ‘event’ didn’t happen where it was either painted by Isaac or dreamed by Peter. A little anticlimatic I thought. And in retrospect I guess that Sylar living or dying would have had no effect on the explosion given Isaac only painted the explosion future and drew the killing of Sylar.

I think this is one of those episodes I need to watch again.

It’s not clear that Sylar lived. He sure looked dead when his eyes glazed over (were there spoilers in the last visions he had, or was he simply revisiting past visions?). It’s been speculated that he was dragged away by something in the sewers, and the cockroach connects with a speech Mohinder made earlier in the season.

I also didn’t understand why Peter didn’t fly or someone else didn’t shoot him. I suppose he was struggling so much to keep from not exploding that he wasn’t able to do anything else (previously he was able to break Sylar’s grip and go invisible, but he didn’t this time). And perhaps shooting him, even in the back of the head, would have set him off like it did Ted.

I thought it was interesting and subtle that saving the cheerleader saved the world not because she killed Peter (which we had been primed to expect) but instead because her words/actions changed Nathan to sacrifice himself (and of course because Sylar wasn’t able to regnerate and maintain control of the scene).

The episode felt a little crowded (almost every character used their abilities) and left some things unexplained and didn’t have as exciting a final battle sequence as it could have (fist fighting? really?). It also felt like they passed up some obvious opportunities to make the plot more twisty and dramatic (like the girl who could bend light reverted to the form we’ve seen her in so many times before, instead of turning out to be overweight and/or disfigured and her ability a way of coping with that), and they should have reached real conclusions instead of leaving so many character’s fates up in the air (Parkman, Sylar, and even Pete and Nathan could all be alive).

I’m still looking forward to season two.
