Silverlight

[Sean Alexander] What is Microsoft Silverlight? It’s our solution for delivering media experiences with audio, video, animation, and interactivity cross-browser (e.g. Firefox, Safari, IE) and cross-platform (Mac and Windows).
WPF/E has finally been re-branded as Sliverlight.
Of course, this is nit-picking, but I’m not sure exactly what a Silverlight is. Perhaps some folks in marketing sat around trying to think of a hip-not-live-or-dot-net-or-2008 name, but to me, it really doesn’t convey much to me about what it does. At least it didn’t end up something like “Windows Presentation Framework ActiveX.Net Video Live 2008 Mobile”
Anyways, for what it’s worth, I’m glad to see this finally making the light of day and I’m guessing that it will probably be the focus of Mix in a few weeks. Quick question - since I’m quickly turning into a mobile phone junkie again, when can we see Silverlight on a Windows Mobile phone? Or, now that I’ve switched to a Blackberry Pearl, how long until we see it there? (I wont even mention iPhone)…
Update: Just saw this post that claims Flash has a 84.3% penetration rate as of March. I’ve been using Flash to encode all of my family videos for awhile now and it’s been pure joy compared to the codec-hell that I used to endure. It will be interesting to see if Silverlight has any real traction here.

The problem that I see with Silverbullet is that it is really just not as evolved as the Flash platfrom. What makes Flash, well, Flash is now the inclusion of FLEX. A full XML dialect for describing user interfaces. So, with Silverlining, what is the XAML for creating a button - oh wait, there isn’t one; with Silvertongue where is the XAML for creating that cool HUD - oh wait, must implement that from scratch too; with SilverTheVampierSlayer, where is the XAML for creating a tree control - yep, none; With SilverSpoons, where is the mechanism for handling virtual lists - yep, a big ricky schroeder on that one too…

I think we’re seeing a bit of slyness in action with the announcement of Silverlight. A good number of the media outlets are claiming that the product runs on Windows, OS X and Linux PCs. However, in visiting the site, I can only find downloads for Windows and OS X.
