While in San Diego last week, one of the first things I did was scout out the closest Starbucks location to my hotel. Fortunately, it was only a block away. On the first morning that I stopped in there, the guy in front of me had a curious order: “Grande Americano, Tall Cup“.

At first, this confused the barista. She stared at the register for a few seconds, then looked back at him with a look like he had asked her to put a hamster in his drink.

Just charge me for a grande, and put it in a tall cup!“, he responded.

She shrugged and moved on. The entire time she shook her head and was mumbling to herself.

In the end, what I suppose the guy really wanted was a tall cup, with the same amount of espresso as a grande. Nonetheless, it was amusing to watch unfold.

I think he was perhaps refering to what we call in French an “Espresso Allong√©” which is like an Espresso but you make more water pass through the same amount of coffee. It’s pretty common in Italian bars in Montreal but whenever I ask for this at Starbucks they serve me a Double Espresso which is not the same thing at all. Oh well…
