I generally like Dreamhost. They offer tons of features and an insane amount of storage for a really good monthly price, but after the two most recent outages, a day without email yesterday and their ‘super-lame-apology‘ (more here and here), I think I may start looking around for a new host.

Some current options:

  • Increase the bandwidth to the house, and just set up my own server (I still have an older powerpc Mac Mini sitting in the closet doing nothing).
  • Colocate the mac mini or another box.
  • Find a new hosting provider that offers me a good amount of storage, values reliability and uptime, and has support for ssh access, domain management, webdav, php, perl, etc.

I’m currently eyeing mediatemple and pair.com. Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?

If your bandwidth needs aren’t obscene I can hook you up on one of my servers.

I’m in love with the hosting I get from icdsoft.com. If you need windows hosting, crystaltech or orcsweb are also two good companies.

I’ve been using 1and1.com for a couple years now. I’ve always been happy w/ the Linux offering…

Shoot me mail if you want more info – I think you get a discount and I get something if I refer you…

I highly recommend Bluehost.com. Excellent service, quick support, no downtime. Really an amazing host.

Funny I recently posted a simulare entry. I don’t have a lot of knowledge on different hosts, but I will strongly suggest you don’t go with godaddy, especially if you use databases. Backup and restores are just not existant without a lot of headaches or extra cost. The comments left here have been a benefit to me too, so thank you everyone. A Windows engineer who uses UNIX servers, I love it.

Hm. I thought it was just me… the email stuff I mean. I knew they had a power outage.

I’d stick with a real host hands down – hosting at home was a disaster for me whenever I’ve tried it. Especially since most companies don’t want you to run servers (or at least they could pull the external port access at any time). But that’s just me…

I use Bluehost, however, to get SSH access, you need to fax them a copy of some picture ID. In addition, they do not support WebDav. Their excuse is that is insecure.

But other than that, been happy with them for the 2 years I have been on them.

The good thing about Bluehost is that the CEO communicates with the user base about issues with the service. I have never had any issues with the service, as long as you keep in mind the two caveats specified above.

I’m disappointed with dreamhost enough to consider switching once my current plan ends in July. Apart from the standard features such as php, mysql, ability to host multiple domains and sub-domains, I’m also looking for ruby on rails and subversion support. Are there any good hosting plan that comes close to dreamhost’s features for less than $10 per month? Bluehost.com’s price is really attractive except that they don’t provide subversion support.

No SVN and no webdav pretty much rule out bluehost.com for me… But, they do look like they have a pretty good package.

we’ve been using mediatemple at kiva.org and i whole-heartedly recommend the grid server (gs). it saved the site after the launch on frontline, and they’ve been scaling out a dedicated solution ever since. they had some kinks a few months after they released it mostly due to overdemand from poorly written custom sites. now things seem to be pretty reliable, but especially for the casual blog or personal site. the price and features are right too.
