“We Fixed Stuff”

Looks like the folks over in the MacBU released a new update for Office 2004 for the Mac yesterday (drat! no .docx converters yet..).
And even though it’s the only PowerPC binary left on my Mac (hint, hint, nudge, nudge) I still really like Office 2004 and use it quite frequently.
My only complaint with these updates are the release notes. Take the latest description:
This update contains several improvements to enhance security and stability, including fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer’s memory with malicious code.
Or, the one from the previous upgrade (1/9/2007):
This update contains several improvements to enhance security and stability, including fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer’s memory with malicious code. In addition, this update includes all of the improvements released in all previous Office 2004 updates.
Or, lets jump a few years earlier to SP1 (10/12/2004):
This service pack addresses several stability issues with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Entourage, and Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications for Office 2004.
You get the point.
Now, I’m can understand why the specifics of security fixes aren’t released – who knows how many systems are out there that are unpatched – why give the evil-doers instructions on how to melt your machine? But, I’d love to actually see what was fixed, changed, updated, sped up, etc., so I know what I’m getting when I apply an update.
Right now, I vote that they just change the release notes to read “We Fixed Stuff” and be done.

This is the same MacBU that went an entire year between press releases (Jan 06 to Jan 07, check their press archives). It’s a miracle they ever ship anything.
