This morning, I was noticing some slow performance on my Comcast ‘high-speed’ internet, which lead me to find Speedtest.Net. It’s a pretty cool flash app that you can use to test your broadband access speeds. From the numbers above, I guess I’m having DNS problems rather than actual bandwidth issues.

When I had comcast out here for service last week, the tech used http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ to test the speed. My download speed at speakeasy is 1/3 of what it was rated at the site you mentioned.

Hey, If you are having DNS issues I found a really neat free DNS provider. I have used them for around 5 months now. no problems whatsoever. Also it seems faster than my ISPs. You can find out more info at http://opendns.com

Comcast is natorious for DNS issues and it never really goes down, so secondary or tercerary listed servers at other providers doesn’t always help. I used to run my own DNS server, which elliminates this issue, but like you, I have reduced my home network. I now have a backup config for my home router which points my DNS to work when Comcast is acting up. I switch it back after the issue is over as it doesn’t conform to policy (Management does have some benefits). I am just glad Vonage uses an IP address, not a name, so my phones aren’t effected.
