[MSNBC] A woman who competed in a radio station’s contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner’s office said Saturday. Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.
I thought that this was just too bizarre not to link to (well, almost as strange as the co-worker throwing up in Randy’s meeting at work).
I had never heard of hyperhydration (or water poisoning) before this. Crazy.

I first heard of water poisoning in school. At the time, we were taught that former president Zachary Taylor died from it — although Wikipedia says there are many possible explanations for his death (and doesn’t even list hyperhydration as one of them).

Actually there was a huge deal about this on a national level a couple years ago when colleges started to crack down on hazing. Frats couldn’t force pledges to drink bear anymore, so they used water instead and a fair number of them died.
I of course have no references to back this up.
