[SA MCE Community Blog] I found it immposible to get the extender to find the other PC’s on my network with content such as music, movies, pictures etc. Whenever I asked it to add folders on another machine, it only found the shares on the MCE 2005 machine. After a bit of thought, I came up with using a login script to map drives under that users profile apon logon.

As I continue to migrate my home storage from a "media center server" to something more NAS-like, I found this post up on the MCE Community Blog which proved to be a big help for getting network share content viewable on the 360 (via its MCE Extender).

Basically, what you need to do is create a netlogon share and have a simple batch file in there that the MCX accounts use to automatically mount any shares with the correct credentials when it logs in. Read the full post for more specific details on how to set this up. It took me 2 minutes and it’s working great.

What makes this particularly compelling is that I can now have a super-small MCE box and leave all of my music, videos and photos on network storage.

Oh, I can’t wait to try this out. The lack of access to network shares has been a large issue with my current 360 / MCE setup. Sometimes it is the simple solutions that seem to escape us.
