Well, I quickly decided after yesterday’s post that a new phone was now a priority. After I remembered that we did a handset upgrade on my wife’s phone a few months ago (thus locking me into a new contract with TMobile), I went ahead and picked up a Dash instead of getting a Blackjack, unlocking it, etc.

So far, I’m pretty happy with the device - setting up email for my home and work email was painless, and thanks to the HTC Wiki’s Dash FAQ, I was able to work around several small annoyances and missing functionality:

Still unresolved:

  • No solution yet to tether the Dash via Bluetooth to the Macbook Pro.
  • Where’s the remote desktop client for smartphone?
  • Anyone know of a wifi scanner? It would be cool to just run an app to see all the networks around you.
  • Why do all the replacement homepages on the net kinda stink? Does anyone know of a decent tool to make your own home screen?

Anyways - more observations as I play with it a bit more. Are there any ‘must-have’ apps or utilities out these days?

I’ve had a Dash for a month now, and I have mixed feelings towards it. It is physically elegant, but I am finding that it locks up more than any WM Pocket PC or Smartphone that I have ever used. I tried the Joggr app and found it too annoying to be useful, and I think the Joggr is poorly implemented. I would rather have a real joggr wheel like a Blackberry. I do agree that the Windows Local Search app is a definite must have.

When you speak to the personal homepages, are you referring to the homepage in Pocket Internet Explorer? There is the one from Dave Beauvais that I have been using since he released it to everyone. You can find it here http://www.beauvais1.com/archives/2004/04/10/pocket-internet-explorer-start-page/

I was actually referring to the screen when you turn on the device, not ie. Thanks for the link though.

I guess the T-Mobile people like not having BT connectivity. Too sad. It really is a nice device. The lack of DUN is not a big thing now that I have one of those Verizon Express/34 EVDO cards, so I do not care about connectivity for data.

No problem - it’s been incredibly useful. Any other great utils or apps you know of?

XBar (http://xetranet.free.fr/xbar2/) is another utility with Copy/Paste functionality. I use it on my SDA.

    Hey everyone,
Also have a Dash, and love it so far. With PocketPuTTY, I am unable to use the letter keys (WERSDFXCV) as actual letters. Only the numbers come through, no matter what entry mode I try to set. Anyone else have this problem, or know of a solution?

Thanks Steve. I just got a Dash myself and your blog entries helped me get functional on it sooner and saved me some grief. It sure is a neat device, even with its shortcomings.

I just bought T-Mobile Dash and downloaded pocketputty. I am able to bring up the application and navigate the tabs using the left and right key, but the up and down keys do not work and I am not able to type anything to enter the domain name or anything at all. Please help.
