Digital Addiction: Dump the Smartphone?

[DeWitt Clinton] It is really amusing seeing Dave getting so darn excited about his new BlackBerry. While I understand his enthusiasm about being able to read (and write) syndicated content on a mobile device, I personally arrived at a totally different place with my BlackBerry. In fact, that place would be hurling the damn thing over the side of the Golden Gate bridge if I didn’t have a conscience about the fish below.
DeWitt has hit the end of the road with his Blackberry and I can see myself not to far behind with my AudioVox 5600 Smartphone. While I love have my schedule and contacts automatically sync’d to the server, I have an addiction to reading my mail every few minutes. Totally drives the wife crazy when I’m driving and checking email.
Perhaps it’s time to dump it, unplug from corporate email and start doing away with digital ADD. Go with the Sony or the PEBL, and just have a phone again.

Or simply stop sync’ing email. My whole reason for getting a WM phone is so I can sync calendar and contact information, without having to use OpenSync or whatever… also makes me less worried about the SIM card, too, since I can just resync the phone with my PC’s. I just make it a point to NEVER sync email.
Although I DO think the PEBL is one of the nicer form factors of all of the Motorola phones (including the SLVR and RAZR).

The PEBL is a really nice phone. When my old Sony Ericsson T68i failed, I went shopping for a phone and got the PEBL. The phone is great for me except the slow J2ME JVM compared with my friend’s SE k750i.
The Rails guy David blogged about his recovery from smartphone addiction and his choice of the PEBL at http://www.loudthinking.com/arc/000574.html.
