Money, Quicken, Etc.

[Omar Shahine] I’ll be blunt. Microsoft Money is the most important application that I use. My entire financial life is in Money. I use practically every feature and been using the product since 1998. I’ve also upgraded to every money version since I first started using it. However, Money 2005 left a sour taste in my mouth that both Money 2006 and now Money 2007 have not adequately addressed…. So, for the first time in close to a decade, I am going to plunk down some Money for Quicken and kick the tires a bit.
Like Omar, Money is one of the most important and long standing applications that I use my PC for and besides Visual Studio, it’s probably the single most used peice of software that I own. Even on my XP virtual machine under Parallels on the Mac, I have Money installed.
Anyways, I mentioned a few weeks back that I had a horrible time trying to get my data out of Money and into Quicken 2006, but now that the new versions are out, I’m really tempted to give Quicken 2007 another shot. In fact, I think I may just move completely over to the Mac version.
Update: Uh Oh.. Initial reviews of Quicken Mac 2007 aren’t too positive.

Unless you do enough with your money that you really should be paying a professional to manage it, I haven’t seen any compelling reasons to update to a new version of any money management software. The complaints about the lack of new features are valid, but then again, what do you want? I bought Quicken when I switched to the Mac (from what I believe was the very first version of Money) in the late 90’s and I bought a version that ran natively in OS X when it came out and I would buy a native Intel copy if it didn’t completely suck.
I would kill for MS Money for the Mac but it sounds like I will also install parallels as soon as I get on the Intel train. Okay, maybe not kill, but some maiming for sure.

I’m sticking with a spreadsheet. It’s archaic, but does everything.
When it comes to software, I fall back to the following adage: The more you overthink the plumbing - the easier it is to stop up the drain. (scotty said that once).

Quicken for the Mac has always been a bastard stepchild of Quicken for Windows. Don’t go there.
I’ve decided to cut over to Quicken on Jan 1st and run it side by side with Money for 30 days and then decide.
