I’m a few hours away from making my final transformation in the way I use computers in my house - I’m about to tear down the last desktop machine. Both Liz and I are now on laptops full time and I’ve set up my old mac mini upstairs in the playroom for Tyler.

The only other traditional "computer" that I’m really left with is the Media Center "server" that I have in the closet. The living room is set up with TiVo, and the home theater runs off of the XBox 360.

Now, I’d be really happy if the 360’s dashboard supported the ability to stream video in the same way it does for audio and photos (over UPNP) then I could realistically move the closet server to a NAS device, and be done with it.

Why not use the Media Center Extender feature of the XBox 360 to connect to your Media Center “server” to get the video functionality you desire (and, quite frandly, a better music + photos experience as well)…?

That what’s I’m doing today. It would work better if MCE supported DVD playback to the extender, so I could use MyMovies or a DVD Changer in the closet, and just use the 360 to drive it.

In the long run, I’d like to be on a single NAS/RAID device in the closet than a huge honking server.
