[Apple Boot Camp] More and more people are buying and loving Macs. To make this choice simply irresistible, Apple will include technology in the next major release of Mac OS X, Leopard, that lets you install and run the Windows XP operating system on your Mac. Called Boot Camp (for now), you can download a public beta today.

At first, I thought it was April 1st again. But from what I can tell, this looks real. And most importantly, it looks like it has video card support.

I’m downloading and installing this right now to check it out. More later today.

Update: I was able to install Windows Media Center 2005 onto the Macbook. Installing Windows Updates now, will update later with benchmarks.

Be sure to let us know how it goes. This could possibly be the tipping point that stops me from procrastinating about whether to take the plunge or not.

It does work nicely, trust me ;) hehe

Why bother with benchmarks? It’s an x86 core duo box. We know exactly how well it’ll perform..

    Curious about video card perf.

Cool about MCE, I had read somewhere that it didn’t work. I’ll be interested to see how it all works out. This was kind of a surprise move from Apple, in my opinion.

Did you have to do anything special to get MCE installed other than using a single DVD version as opposed to the 2 CD set?

    Steve (April 6, 2006 @ 6:00 am)

Sean - Nope. I basically copied the 2 install CD’s to a single folder, and burned a bootable DVD from that. No problems.

    Usman (April 6, 2006 @ 6:05 pm)

Are you able to use the MCE remote and IR receiver with it? Or just the OS?

    Steve (April 6, 2006 @ 6:08 pm)

The remote and IR receiver just plug into the USB port, and work fine.

could u post how u did the bootable dvd for MCE ? cuz i seems to have a prob getting it done

    Pat (April 7, 2006 @ 7:28 am)

I would think that the bootable DVD would have to made with a PC.

    Steve (April 7, 2006 @ 11:00 am)

Barb posted good instructions how to do it:

An important question (for me), can you use the Mac mini as a region free player with MCE?
I heard from a guy at the Apple store that Mac mini are region looked by the software and not through the firmware in the DVD-rom? I would like to play both reg.1 (USA) and reg.2 (Europe).

    Milbo (April 9, 2006 @ 11:28 am)

I installed MCE on my Mac Mini, but I cannot get Apple’s Drivers to install. It locks my system up the first time. Then any attempts to boot end up with a dead mouse and keyboard.

cool! maybe 2000, and longhorn will work too! cant wait for lepoard

    Dj-Monkey (April 12, 2006 @ 1:04 am)

Person called v - did you just call Windows Vista longhorn ??? Hm…..

MCE ON A MAC MINI? Great! Get a tv tuner and you have the best media centre on the market…

    Entity (April 12, 2006 @ 4:23 pm)

Would a PC-only tv tuner work on an intel iMac via the bootcamp version of windows xp?

Like if i get a USB TV tuner that is compatible with PC’s only, if I plug it into an iMac USB port (booted with winxp via boot camp), will it work? Or don’t the USB drivers in the bootcamp winxp work?

Also, if it does work, is there a way to get the apple remote to work with windows xp? Are the drivers for the remote also installed from the bootcamp CD?

Actually another question is, what drivers are installed? Is it just the basic video, sound, dvdrw drivers? or does it include the USB, firewire, ethernet, etc?

One more question… if windows xp recognizes the mac superdrive as a DVD writer, will Nero in windows recognize it? I.E will I be able to use Nero to burn stuff from my iMac via the bootcamp version of Windows XP?

Can someone who has the time please answer my questions….

    Thanks =)

Yes!! for Everything i have a iMAC 20″ and a MacBook Pro 17 and both running great witih Windows XP Pro, i play halfLife2 and Doom3 and both run with no problem, and Nero too so everything work, just that apple dont want to the windows users feel goo about windows and dont even boot OSX so the audio dont work with headphones, no power management so battery runout quick.
and the isight no drivers, everything work great!!, i used OSX with a powerbook G4, and to be honest i dont see how some people talk soo much about windows is suck. i am happy and no virus or spyware, you just have to know how to use windows.

    Balahir (May 30, 2006 @ 11:00 pm)

Anyone else having problems installing MCE on the MacMini? I experience the same problems as reported above by Milbo. After restart, Win MCE starts from the HD, then does a drive check and then locks. Also, how do I eject the MCE DVD?

    Steve Hollingworth (June 3, 2006 @ 1:02 pm)

Re ejecting CD : Click and hold the mouse button down at system startup.

Re Media center: got installed fine but after installing the mac driver cd I just get a blue screen at startup. Any ideas?

    Running on a mac mini

    Balahir (June 6, 2006 @ 11:37 pm)

Thanks Steve, I found the info also in the troubleshooting section of Apples BootCamp doc.

I never really got MCE to work, so instead tried Vista Beta 2, and it works really great, except for some driver issues which I believe can be resolved easily. The performance is astonishing. My impression is that Vista Beta 2 is faster than OS X on my Mini Core Duo with 1 GB RAM…

Being a true Mac fan since 1990, I have only one thing to say to Apple: You better make Leopard really, really good…

    Tom (September 14, 2007 @ 12:37 pm)

I am trying to install windows xp pro w service pack 2 through boot camp on my mac book pro. Every time I get to the install part of windows, my keyboard and mouse die. Any suggestions? This is very frustrating, I have found plenty of comments about this on line, but no answers.
    thanks
