[Fred Langa via MAKE] A short while ago, I received a challenge from a reader who didn’t believe me when I said in print that it was possible to put together a brand-new terabyte (1,000 Gbytes) file server for around $500. Well, you can, and I did. The example system I put together now resides on the far side of my office, offering up a thousand gigabytes–that’s a lot of disk space!–as network storage on my office LAN.

All you need to do is add a TV card, a RAID-5 controller and Windows Media Center and you have everything you need to build a Home Media Server.

What I am missing in the article is license fees for the operating system and the applications used. It seems that this box was made using commercially available software. I have to admit that I didn’t really read more than scanning headlines and looking at pics, but wouldn’t the software on there cost money too?

If you use Windows (or MCE), sure you need to buy the appropriate software. He mentions that in the article.
