Cultural Phenomenon?

[Scoble] I keep coming back to the iPod. Why is it such a cultural phenomenon? Hint: it isn’t the features. At least not alone. It’s the combination of the technology with fashion and culture.

For some bizarre reason, most people just dont get that it’s about personal expression. "The object is an extension of themselves just as much as their clothing or interior decoration".
Kinda a simple concept, no?

If it were only about that then other portable media centers that have record capabilities (and, even, more colors) would be more popular.
They aren’t. Why? Just ask my son. Apple is cooler.
But, why are they cooler? Start with conversations that the product engenders. White headphones broke all the rules but got people to talk. “What is that that you’re wearing?”
