[Brian Johnson] Well, it’s that time of year again, when I start to plan out how I’m going to take notes and try to keep myself organized for the year. I’ve had a lot of success with OneNote, but this year I’m starting with the Mac team and so I decided to use the Notebook feature of Word 2004 for Mac to design a note taking system for myself that I think should work.

Word 2004 on the Mac has a really good notebook feature that the PC version could really use. My only guess is that it’s not available on the PC since it has OneNote (side note to Brian and the Mac Office team: I’m begging you for a Mac version of OneNote). In the mean time if you’re a Mac user, check out Brian’s notebook templates or you might also want to check out VoodooPad - it’s a pretty awesome ‘personal’ wiki/notetaker.

For myself, I’m still planning on using a cross between my 21st Century PDA (a moleskine notebook) and OneNote 12. I’ve been using a beta for a few months (check Chris Pratley’s blog for more info with a list of new features here) and have been super happy with the new features. The ability to have hyperlinks, shared notebooks and images searchable via OCR have just been killer features.

I would strongly recommend OmniOutliner Pro over Word. It’s an awesome outliner and has all kinds of nice tricks inside…
