[Yahoo News] TiVo Inc. is expanding its video recording service so users will be able to transfer recorded television shows onto Apple Computer Inc.’s iPods or Sony Corp.’s PlayStation Portable – the latest move aimed at putting TV in people’s hands for viewing anywhere…. Now, by adding support for the MPEG-4 video format, TiVo hopes to capitalize on the popularity of iPods and PSPs, which are among today’s hottest handheld gadgets with video capabilities.

Nothing against WMV or AVI, but I’m really hoping that with the popularity of PSP and iPod video, this marks the beginning of the end of codec hell for video. And depending on how simple TiVo makes this, it probably means the standardization of MP4 as the defacto video encoding standard, similar to what MP3 has become for music.

My current dilemma is that since I use my PSP for watching video more than playing games, I’m torn regarding whether or not I upgrade my "old" 20gb iPod to the video model to a shiny new video iPod.
