[Scoble] Yesterday will be remembered not because of what we announced. But because of the direction we’re now headed in. Microsoft is no longer an applications company. It is a services company.
When I read this post from Scoble I was overcome a single feeling: I wanted to smash my head repeatedly against my desk. Over and over and over and over again.
There’s really only one way I can respond to that statement: Unsubscribe.

But you don’t say why you are going to unsubscribe. Why?

Funny: I had written and rewritten this post with the reasons why that statement drove me insane. I was so beside myself, I had to delete and start over several times.
(Disclaimer: Totally my own opinion here)
Scoble is lost in the Web 2.0 vortex. The *-Live announcement was the *exact* opposite of saying we’re a ’services company’, but rather the realization of what we set out to do when .NET was announced - to create RICHER applications that (may) use services that enhance the experience.
No software is an island.

Well it’s not just Scoble who is off the mark here. I’m reading titles in the press like “Microsoft to offer online versions of Windows and Office.”
After watching the web cast and virtual company meeting I thought I had a good handle on it… until I tried to explain it to someone else. We (Microsoft) really need to get out some clear messaging on this one to avoid same kind of confusion that existed when .NET was announced.

BANG!
Consider yourself shot! (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)
Scoble does like to talk a lot of crap. Taking Scoble’s assertion that we should all now perceive MS as a service provider (and that doesn’t sit well with me), here’s a novel idea: stop trying to compete against Google! Let Google take care of the services and Microsoft make compelling software that utilises those services in innovative ways. It’s just a thought.

Sorry for the koolaid. I’ll calm down in about a week and come to my senses.
