Nero 7 and PSP

After posting about the iPod video support last week, I’ve been playing a bit more with Nero 7 and encoding videos for PSP. (FYI: Scott has a great post about this).
Since I prefer to stay far away from codec hell and crazy encoding practices (I wont install a hacked together codec pack, etc), I use Nero pretty frequently since it’s a fairly reliable point-and-click solution. Add in the fact that I just bought Nero 7 and Nero Recode includes a profile to handle PSP encoding. However after playing with it a bit, I was disappointed to find out it had some limitations: Nero only handles 160×112 or 320×240 resolutions, no AVC support, and only 4:3 (it can’t handle 368×208 widescreen).
I contacted tech support, and they responded pretty quickly: "I am afraid I have to disappoint you, this feature is currently not available due to our Licence Agreemnet with Sony. The current setting options of Recode’s PSP profile have been implemented exactly in the way Sony wanted them to be. Other converter offer this and probably other features, because they have not been licensed. Most of them infact are Freeware converter."
Bummer, as much as I was avoiding it, I’m going to have to give PSPVideo9 a try now, even though ffmpeg, etc., are much slower than Recode (FYI - Scott’s post has some good settings for various 4:3 and 16:9 profiles).
One last note: Nero and the PSP profile does do a pretty good job of videos that can be imported into iTunes.

Just a quick note to say Vegas can export directly to the PSP, another reason to switch

Really? How (I already have Vegas)?

They added the feature in the last incremental update to Vegas 6 (6c)
I assume it is not yet in Movie Studio though I guess it might come in an update. Let me do some research to see if they are planning to implement the feature.

Kudos to technical support for actually saying why they didn’t support other resolutions. Too often tech support seems to say things like, “At the present time we don’t support other resolutions.” Which, of course, is obivous because you are asking the question. We want to know why: is it a technical reason or like in this case, contractual.
