Update: Details about Portable CE 3.0 are now online.

In the comments of my instructions of how to set up Portable CE 2.0, BadBob001 posted some information where to download the Windows Mobile 5 emulation ROM files. Here’s how you can update Portable CE 2.0 to Windows Mobile 5 (however, I have to admit that it seems a lot slower):

  1. Download the Windows Mobile 5.0 SDK for Pocket PC from MSDN.
  2. Extract the SDK to a folder on your hard drive by running “msiexec /a “Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC SDK.msi“”. The installer will prompt you to specify a directory to extract to, for example “D:\WM5SDK
  3. Copy the emulation ROM file (Deviceemulation\0409\PPC_USA.bin or Deviceemulation\0409\PPC_USA_VGA.bin) from the folder you extracted the SDK to a folder on your USB keychain. I placed it under my Portable CE install into a PPC_2005 folder.
  4. Change the launch script to use the new emulator file. It’s currently set to:
    set EMULATORIMG=”%CD%\PPC_2003_SE\PPC_2003_SE_WWE_ARMv4.bin”
    I changed this to:
    set EMULATORIMG=”%CD%\PPC_2005\PPC_USA.bin”
  5. That’s it.

You should now be able to run pce2.cmd and have it launch the new ROM. If there’s any interest, I can post the new launch script.

Update: There’s now a mailing list for comments on Portable CE here.

Please post the new launch script. Thanks!

Tried this just now. Worked perfectly!! My first view and use of WM2005 too. Seems to work ok. Like the “true” VGA of the WM2003SE rom though.

Modifying the included script was really easy. Just overwrite the line with the WM2003SE path in it. Make sure you have your rom in the PPC_2005 folder and it is named PPC_USA.bin, or it won’t work with the above edit.

Hopefully this will work on the computers at my school.

Made my own “dual boot” for WM2003SE and WM2005. Made a copy of the launch script, making separate save state folders so that you can launch either without them affecting each other.

I made my “dual boot” system too, with different “state” and “apps” folders and it works well.
My only problem is that the WM5 don’t want to run in VGA mode.
I checked the romfile and it seems ok to me,
I’m using the PPC_USA_GSM_VGA_VR.BIN image file.

    hi,

found this page browsing the internet for “wm5 boot disk”.
My goal would be to find a little app to be used to take over desktop resources from any WM5 powered smartphone/PDA.
Now that these small devices have the necessary processing power, i don’t see why some skilled programmer shouldn’t come up with such a nifty program.

i would LOVE to connect my WM5 smartphone ( HTC UNIVERSAL ) to the USB port of any desktop and use it’s HD, mobo, monitor, DVD,…

Do you think this is possible ?

    thanks for feedback,
    cheers,
    John

I may be a little slow, so bare with me. What I need is someone to help me build a Mobile USB Pin that will work 2 ways one will boot cold from the USB Pin and the second To boot through windows USB. I have Downloaded the following files or programs:
    snetcfg
    launchce.cmd
    DeviceEmulator050419
    Microsoft Windows CE 5.0 Emulato
    emu_Bat
    Portable Firefox 1.0.7 (USB)
    Portable OpenOffice.org 1.1.4 & 2.0 Beta (USB)
    AntiVirus (avwinsfx)
    CoolPlayer (CoolPlayer215_Bin)
    Trillian (trillian-v3.1)
    KeePass (040531-KeePass.0.2.2_1.exe.7z )
Now I need some one to help me setup every thing pass by pass. I have windows 2000 with all hotfix for win 2000, IE6, IE SP1, and Win 2000 SP4.
Is there any thing else I need?

    Help Please

This looks like a good idea, only prob is when i try to extract the emulator using msiexec /a command all I get is the help dialogue box. Any ideas where I’m going wrong? Many thanks..

It would seem you missed the windows mobile bit out of msiexec /a. Type all of what is below to extract:

“msiexec /a “Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC SDK.msi”
