Why is it that I need to repave my box every year or so? Granted, I usually have tons of dogfood and beta apps on it, but it’s pretty annoying that every 12 months I’m finding that I need to completely blast my OS and reinstall everything.

Here’s the latest:

  • MS Money crashes every time I close it now. Kinda worrysome since I have 6 years of financial data in there.
  • IE now won’t let me click on the "Favorites" menu. When I do, I get the first two items, then a nice blank "blob".
  • Video corruption. I have little blobs of garbled pixels when the Windows XP logo is shown while booting, on the I-Beam cursor and in various places on my screen.

Hm. Perhaps my video card is on the fritz. Argh.

You are lucky, at one point I had to “refresh” Windows every 3 months or so. Since getting my “new” computer a year ago I had managed to keep the same install for most of that year after the first couple reinstalls (within the first week). If you are the kind of person that uses the same versions of some software without updating you can always just make a custom Windows install CD/DVD and have even less headache with drivers and programs.
