It’s one thing to be in a car accident - I know, I’ve been in my share of doosies. In high school, I was a passenger in a SUV that crashed up someone’s front porch and into someone’s living room. A few years later (as a passenger again), a friend lost control and hit one of those massive highway signs. Of course the sign came unhinged and ended up smashing into the roof and I took a ride to the hospital. The last one I was in, I was driving an Acura Integra when a 15 passenger van decided to run a red light and careen right into the driver’s side.

Yesterday was something entirely different though - I heard my wife get in a car accident, and had several minutes with no idea what was going on.

It fortunately ended up not being that big of a deal (minor bumper damage), but it sure was scary. I was talking to my wife on the way home from work after I picked our son up from daycare when she had mentioned that she was coming upon an accident and there was some traffic.

There were a few seconds of silence, and then BAM! I asked what the noise was, she said she was just in an accident, but was ok and would call me back. *Click*

I knew I was only about 10 minutes away, so I quickly began to make my way over there. But boy, those 10 minutes sure seemed like an eternity. Fortunately, a few minutes later, Liz called and said everything was fine, it was a minor fender bender and she was already on her way.

Last week I was driving home after a meeting in downtown Houston and my wife called me about something. While she was on the phone with me a car sideswiped an 18 wheeler, lost control and shot across 3 lanes coming to a stop sideways in front of me. I was able to stop just 2 feet from the passenger door of the car and all of this while my wife was on the phone. I don’t even remember what I said while it was unfolding but she was in the same position you were and didn’t like it one bit.

It’s another reason why I try to stay off my phone when I’m driving. BTW, the driver who caused the accident was on her cell phone too and after coming to a stop right in front of me she calmly hung up her phone and then moved her car to the shoulder.
