Ask and you shall receive! While I doubt my post "Dear Tivo" had anything to do with it, I had my Tivo To Go upgrade on my box within 24 hours. Here’s my 30 second review (didn’t have must time to play with it last night):

  • Good: Accessing the Tivo via the web interface is cool, and having access to the XML describing what’s been recorded makes using tools such as logparser on it pretty straightforward (Hmm - I could auto-generate an RSS feed of what I’ve recorded, etc).
  • Ugly: Sloooooooooooooow. Downloading a video file from the Tivo is slower than molasses, regardless of whether you use the web interface or Tivo Desktop (the web interface seemed to be the faster of the two). I downloaded a 30 minute program (around 1.3gb), and I finally went to go eat dinner it was taking so long. This was a bit of a surprise, since I’m using a hard-wired Ethernet connection and the house is setup on gigabit (I’m using a 10/100BT USB dongle on the Tivo).
  • Bad: I had originally downloaded a few shows onto my server (where Tivo Desktop is running to share out my MP3’s and photos). However, I could not watch the downloaded video on my laptop until I installed Tivo Desktop on it, due to the encryption and the Tivo DirectShow filter. I also attempted to manually install just the DirectShow filter, since I didn’t want the entire desktop software installed on the laptop, just the ability to watch a show.
  • Ugly: Converting files to any other format is a royal pain. I was really excited to finally have the seamless ability to shoot recorded video around the house, but this is NOT it.

Bottom line: More ugly and bad than good.

This leaves me back where I started - in a digital quandary on how to get recorded TV around the house in some way that has a high wife-acceptance factor (WAF). Perhaps I should start looking into replacing Tivo with something else, like a small form factor Windows Media Center (since my theater is already running MCE) or a HDTV Comcast box (although getting video off the Comcast box is an even bigger pain).

A slightly related blog entry inspired by the wife-acceptance factor (WAF): http://www.davidbrownell.com/Entries/2005/01/2005.01.21.html

Tivo Series 2 is 10baseT only. Which doesn’t really matter, I guess, since Series 1 had no official ethernet support.

Anyway, yeah, 10baseT is ass. In general, but video is adding insult to injury.
