I noticed today that the MSN Desktop Search wasn’t properly indexing my email on my work machine - it consistently returned no results for things that I knew were there. After going to the Indexing->Options dialog, selecting "Specific Locations" and hitting "Browse", I noticed that Outlook wasn’t being recognized as my default email client, even though it’s properly configured on the system as the default.

After searching around it turns out that I had run MSN Explorer at some point which looks like it creates a registry key that can ‘confuse’ Desktop search.

The fix is simple, just delete the registry key HKCU\Software\Clients\Mail.

After that, all is well :)

    Steven,

do you happen to know how one can make it index .cs files? also, i had problems with email indexing in outlook express. it would index some folders, but some it wouldn’t. any idea what would cause this ? (i just deinstalled because the way it was, index service is much more useful.)
