Simon Guest has a great tip for those using the MSN Toolbar suite - setting it up to search the MSDN library based on a class name.

If you don’t have the MSN Toolbar installed, you can still do this in Internet Explorer by using Tweak UI. Go to Internet Explorer->Search and hit "Create". Then, set the following:

Prefix: msdn
URL: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/library/%s

Of course, you can set the prefix to anything you want. After hitting OK, you can go to the address bar and type "msdn System.String".

Additional Tip: I have an address bar in my Task Bar already. If you right-click on the task bar, under Toolbars select "Address".

I thought I had finally found a replacement for Dave’s Quick Search Deskbar (DQSD) (which is partially broken in Win XP SP2) based on this tip! Unfortunately, it comes very close but won’t completely replace DQSD. You can’t have a prefix by itself correspond to a search within the address bar. For example, I can’t have “FooBar” goto “http://www.FooBar.com“ because the address bar doesn’t recognize the single word “FooBar” as a search and instead tries to go to http://FooBar. If I type “FooBar ignore_me” in the address bar, it will go to the URL I provided in my search. Bummer.

Um, why not just type “foobar” then hit Ctrl+Enter. That will automatically go to http://www.foobar.com
