[Matt Berther] When you open a filetype that is unregistered on your system, you get presented with a time-wasting dialog about if you would like to use a web service to find the appropriate program, or select the program from a list.

Matt has instructions posted on bypassing the “Choose a Web Service“ dialog - it’s an excellent tip and recommended to get past that annoying dialog.

When applying this though, I found the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Tips registry key. In there, there’s some amusing ‘tips’ that I thought I’d like to share:

  • For a bit of diversion, try a game in the Games folder. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Games, and then click a game.

  • You can minimize neck strain by positioning your monitor at eye level.

  • You can use your right mouse button to drag files. Try it and see what happens!

  • You can customize Windows NT in many ways.  Don’t hesitate to experiment!

Curious: I wonder what the process is to get a tip into the OS.

I don’t remember how he did it, but I distinctly recall a coworker getting a “Tips” Explorer Bar at the bottom of his Explorer window at one point. From what I can recall of the tips that were displayed, it sounds like they’re pulled from the location that you found in the Registery.
