24 Hours With the New Ipod

Here’s my observations after 24 hours with the new Ipod.
A bit disappointed that the 20gig model doesn’t come with a case, a dock and (I knew this) that most of my generation 2 accessories (the iTrip, power connectors) won’t work with it.
Other than that, it’s awesome. Battery life is great, sound is better than ever. Very happy with the purchase.
The only downside is that I’m still stuck with iTunes. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fine piece of software, but I’m really getting annoyed that every piece of media software thinks they need to have their own ‘library’. This, coupled with the fact that Windows Media 10’s ‘enhanced device support‘ doesn’t support it, leaves me searching for a better solution (both integration and memory wise - iTunes is a pig). Perhaps once WinFS comes along, things will get a bit better.
In the mean time, I think I might give Anapod Explorer a try, and dump iTunes completely.

Why not install the Windows Media Device Manager SDK and write a service provider for the iPod? I’ve seen a couple of projects on the web that have source code for reading/modifying the iPod music database on the device etc.

I’ll have to look into that - I didn’t realize there was an SDK available. Looks like I need to sign a license though: http://wmlicense.smdisp.net/licenserequest2/licenserequest.aspx
Since Anapod links the Ipod up as a drive, I might be able to get away with that as a solution - will try it tonight when I get home.

Here is a link to one of the projects that supply source code to read and modify the iPod’s music database.

Reading the comments it would appear that even with the iPod mounted as a drive which should allow you to dump music files onto the device you would still need to update the music database on the iPod to make it aware of the music you’ve dumped.

Thanks for the links. Still, I’d prefer not having to write this myself.
