WS-Discovery

After all the recent ‘baby-talk’, I figured it was time for a good ole technology post.
WS-Discovery was announced today: “Intel, Microsoft Corporation, BEA systems and Canon Incorporated will publish a new Web services specification, WS-Discovery, which describes a way for a Web service to easily find and connect with other Web services over a network automatically. The publication of the specification is an effort to expand the existing Web services architecture to computing and peripheral devices that are not typically reachable through Web services, such as computer peripherals, computing appliances, and consumer electronics.“
Right after I started to dabble around with Rendezvous, it was apparent to me that a need for an ‘announcement’ and ‘discovery’ protocol was an absolute must for portable devices, home internetworked electronics, offices, etc. I’m glad to see the WS-Discovery has finally made the light of day - it would be nice if the Tivo Home Media option or Windows Media Center edition adopted WS-Discovery for finding (and serving) media content.
I’m also curious to see if Apple will migrate Rendezvous to support this or not.
