I’ve had Comcast HDTV now for about 24 hours so here are my initial thoughts and observations:

  • Picture on the HDTV channels is simply amazing compared to regular digital cable.

  • It’s kind of annoying on KOMO-HD, where only some content is broadcast in HDTV - on show’s that don’t broadcast in HD, you’ll not only get the top/bottom letterbox effect, but also on the left and right. I am looking forward to checking out this weeks Monday Night football though, which is broadcast in HD.

  • ESPN-HD feels “stretched” to letterbox, rather than KCTS (PBS), which I thought has the best picture of any channel so far.

  • Tivo’s channel guide doesn’t seem to want to show all the HD channels for the Comcast Enhanced Digital Rebuild. While it does show KCTS (108), Mariners (100), KOMO (104) and ESPN-HD (173) are all missing. I’ve already tried re-running guided setup, with no luck.

  • The new box is awesome. DVI and component outputs, ethernet and USB connectors, and coax digital sound. Very cool, although I wish could use the ethernet for something - no idea what it’s used for currently.
  • Overall I’m pretty happy, especially since I didn’t have to pay any extra per-month for it. Of course, I wish there were more channels broadcasting in HD, but I’m sure that will come in time.
