Developer Blues

[Simon Fell] I’m having a hard time getting excited about any current OS platform choice. I have something of a love/hate thing going with OSX, it looks like a great platform to develop on, and there are some real interesting things going on (NetNewsWire, Spring), but the Apple developer docs absolutely stink, the only place I’ve found where anyone knows what’s going on is the carbon mailing list, which has a terrible web archive, which is password protected to boot, so isn’t getting indexed by anyone, this makes tracking down anything a painful time consuming process. Equally though, Windows development doesn’t get me excited any more either. Sometimes I wish I’d never sold my Amiga 500 !
Simon, I hear ya loud and clear. After spending the last few months in the deep dark (and sometimes dingy) depths of Windows CE/Pocket PC again, I find myself gasping for air. There’s so many things these days about software development that just aren’t fun anymore. I’m personally tired of new three-letter-acronyms every month that are obsolete in no time, as well as companies have turned the development process into a grinding deathmarch. Sometimes I feel like the days of computing that captured the imagination are over.
I too, sadly miss my Amiga 500.
