Last week, I mentioned my fustration at the lack of innovation lately in the PDA space, which was mainly spawned by all of the recent announcements of the “me too” devices from Toshiba and Viewsonic.

After reading both Bryce’s and Frank’s comments, I decided to really sit down and think about some of the basics that would provide me with a more “mobile” digital assistant.

Of course, there’s always some whiz-bang hardware innovations that would be great:

  • Integrate a screen cover. I have no idea why no one really does this. My HP 548 had this, and it was a life saver.

  • Longer battery life. I also agree with Frank on this.. battery life is terrible right now.

  • Build better means for typing. Im sorry, i can’t take notes or write emails on the PDA - as hard as I try, it’s still hunt and peck for me on the popup keyboard. Either integrate a keyboard like the danger or blackberry or treo.

  • Add a camera. Sony does this with the Clie. I can’t imagine, with the low cost of USB cameras, that this would be an expensive item to add to the device.
  • While these add some neat features to the device, I think the crux of the matter is that that the lacking mobile “experience” I get is due to the software. For some reason, I get a “Toys R Us” feeling whenever I use the device. Web browsing doesn’t feel natural, it’s more of a “crammed” and unfriendly experience. And Email? Well, it just isn’t very good email software.

What about the ability to search the device like Google? That would definately make my device more productive.

I dunno - perhaps this is nothing more than another rant. Perhaps im just hungry for something new or just that im running late for lunch.
