Neat technology alert!
While surfing over the weekend, I came across server al sites mentioning the new Soundbug. What is it? Essentially, it’s a small device that plugs into MP3 players, portable CD players, IPAQ’s, a Walkman, etc., and turns any flat surface into a soundboard. Essentially, you can turn your desk or window into a speaker.
Weird. So, how does it work? Basically, the soundbug transmits the sound by a small piece of Terfenol, which is a mixture of rare earth metals and iron. It’s then wrapped in an aluminum case, which is then wrapped in a coil. When electricity is passed through the coil, the Terfonal is expanded, resulting in a force of 400 pounds. Soundbug then transmits electronic signals into mechanical energy causing the flat surface to vibrate and broadcast the sound.
Totally cool.
